What If My First-time Freshman Does Not Qualify?

  • Your student should contact his or her high school counselor to see if he or she can repeat any college preparatory courses in which her or she may have received a grade lower than a “C.” This can also raise the GPA.
  • Students can take the SAT or ACT again. The CSU will take the highest score from each sitting of the test to raise the total score.

Example:  If a student took the SAT in October and scored a 460 on the critical reading portion and 530 on the math portion for a total of 990 and then took the SAT again in March and scored a 500 on the critical reading portion and 510 on the math portion for a total of 1010, the CSU would combine the highest scores from each sitting of the test to give a total score of 1030.

  • If the student is missing courses altogether, he or she may be able to take an equivalent course at the local community college. Remember, one semester at the community college is equal to one year from high school.
  • Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is a need- based admission and retention program that also helps students who do not meet all of the admission criteria. If your family meets the income guidelines for EOP (http://www-ugs.csusb.edu/eop/english/income.htm) and your student is admitted to their program, he or she will be admitted to Cal State San Bernardino.
