Preparing for College
The support of parents and family is crucial to the success of students seeking to further their education. Scheduling a family quiet time so any current students in the home can study and others can engage in quiet activities can foster an environment for scholastic excellence. Taking the time to look at this W eb site and educating yourself on what is available for your student shows that you understand how important a college education is to your student’s future.
It is never too early for you or your student to plan for college. If your student takes the right courses and is aware of required tests from the beginning of his or her high school career, they can make a smooth transition in to the university. Some students and their families begin to plan as early as the sixth grade.
Developing a good set of study skills and setting a higher standard for grades earned can be an important factor for getting into the university that a student wants to attend. Families can help by allowing students time during the week to focus on their schoolwork and by encouraging academic achievement.
Find out if there are any programs or clubs available at your student’s school to support those who are interested in going to college and encourage your student to join them. (AVID, Future Leaders, etc.) Check to see if any programs are offered at the university your student is interested in that would allow future students to participate in university culture.
